The Buri Palm (Corypha Elata Roxb) can reach 40 metres and live to about 30 years and produces three kinds of fibre, the buri, raffia and buntal. It yields midrib for furniture, whole leaf for baskets and mats, vascular bundles for bags and epidermis for dolls and woven material. The unopened leaf can be worked in two ways. Separated from the midrib and cut into strips it is called buri and hand woven into bags, hats and placemats or fibres are extracted by combing to make raffia.
